Here a piece of history.

We have emerged from Whale City Sound .We still singing in this chorus and we are proud to be part of it. Whale City Sound is now 25 years and has over 70 members. Singing in the barbershop style for us is still a great attraction. In good and clean singing in this style creates harmonics which sound is enhanced the Ringing Chords. This gives its distinct character of barbershop singing.

The Barbershop History.

About the origin of the barbershop style are many stories in circulation.

In the Wikipedia free encyclopedia, we find over the barbershop singing and the emergence of the following: barbershop is, generally, an easy to catchy way of close harmony singing. Where you could see close harmonies as classical music, made with only the voice and thus a capella, without adding any instrumental accompaniment. The barbershop is here the popular little sister! Terms of classification, however, the two types of singing are under the catagorie of light music in with the barbershop may be considered as an folk art . In close harmony, we often against a mix of both professional and amateur, however, the barbershop is just an amateur sport, sometimes hanging on to the semi-professional. And so with a high quality of singing is often unlikely.

In the Netherlands there are about 1770 (of which 1200 women) singers. From living room to a concert hall, this style is everywhere to be heard in various formations of either only women or only men (exchanges with men and women are also made). It is always four-part music consisting of a bass that provides the engine of the song, the tenor a second upper voice sings, a lead that often follows the melody, a baritone, in each chord trying to perfect a beautiful whole. The lead is often the storyteller and the other singers support that. The melody can also be sung by one of the other voices.

It is generally assumed that the singing style originated in the Afro-American culture from around 1900. Where The Barbershop, was a prominent meeting place, and where male customers waiting for their cut and or shave the time tried to kill with some vocals in the form of woodshedding. The Afro-American churches where the Close Harmony one tradition has its origin is the barbershop quartet.

It was mostly known folk songs with familiar emotions like Love, Mother Love, Patriotism. These are still popular themes in the style. If a man began singing as hooked on the feeling in their voice to a harmonious chord arose. This crude form of barbershop called "woodshedding" is to this day still practiced primarily as training in listening and understanding the chords, learn to know better.

It is a hobby for men and women whom enjoyed much the practicing. And all over the world!

The repertoire consists mainly of the style of English songs from the first decades of the twentieth century and the modern musical programs of our time. The songs are edited in a specific barbershop arrangement but also composers and lyricists are written special arrangements for barbershop. Many groups make trips to the close harmony style. But the Good Old Barbershop Song remains the main where the fans involved.

With frequency is a so called convention held in which all Barbershop Singers and fans of this genre come together to meet each other and to enter the competition. It choirs and quartets are judged on three categories: Singing, Presentation and Music. (The observant reader will see what happens here. Indeed, the name of our quartet: S.P.A.M.)

An important aspect of our singing is the presentation. A good presentation makes it attractive for the public performance. All ways of emotion and atmosphere of the song to express are taking out of the closet and fully exploited. Depending on the nature of the group or the presence of specific talents is a choreography applied, which is very simple to very sophisticated can be. The show element plays important role.

On the clothing is often addressed with the use of color and brilliance more rule rather than exception. The basis of the presentation lies in singing with a natural look: happiness, love or sadness are associated with sounds and text, supported by facial expressions and body language.

Everything is sung from memory because it encourages contact with the public.

Formations, Voice-parties and Technology.

The formations which are sung in are numerous. The smallest unit is a quartet, so each voice represents a party per person. (A so-called "fifth-Weeling" in the style NOT allowed, unless the formation will the singer invited) The main formation is the choir, singers whose number is determined by the desire of the members or the size of the place of rehearsal, but always is considering the balance between the various parties.

Lead usually sings the melody and sound must be clear above the others. The bass sings the base and serves in the choir also significantly represented. The Baritone and adapts to both above and below the lead singing and gives the tone and balance and the different notes by alternately to lead or bass to colors. The tenor sings the highest party, small and thin and always tangible, but rarely in the foreground.

If a choir or quartet pure singing creates often the tenor voice as dominant, a natural phenomenon Ringing Chords hot and characteristic of the Barbershop.

A proper combination of the members of the formation may lead to a beautiful balance and purity and dynamics so that is a pleasure to listen to their singing and if you notice that beautiful chords arise directly from the kick it gives.

This style of singing requires the necessary strength and inspiration, but above all the courage to each other in this way to sing the song and the message to your audience across.

And that gives you the ultimate satisfaction of singing together.
